In several countries, you may need to add a zero when dialing within the country. However, you can drop the zero when you are using the internal area code. For instance, if you are dialing a number in Cambridge, the UK. You will need the internal area code as 01223. So, the number would be: 01223 xxxxxx. Here, you add a zero with the internal area code of Cambridge. You will find area codes from 2 digits to as many as 5 digits. This internal area code works as an identifier for the geographic region.

Likewise, if you are calling at the same number from France, you will only be able to initiate the international phone call by adding 00 (double zero) and then the internal area code followed by the phone number. So, the number would be 00 44 1296 xxxxxx. Here, 44 is the international (country) code, 1296 is the area code for Aylesbury followed by the phone number.
